Everted Sanctuaries VI communicates about the complex needs of introverts by transforming a book through stop-motion animation. The book functions as a metaphor for the uncomfortable process of becoming temporarily extroverted. Its plain exterior parts to reveal intricate interiors—beautiful, but unintended consequences of the contortions necessary to fit in. This work establishes the importance of sanctuary for introverts and asks viewers to consider the depth and vulnerability concealed beneath silent surfaces.

Community Connections

In Everted Sanctuaries the artist describes a micro world of introversion and extroversion. As a librarian I see the everted sanctuary as a macro story of what reading and libraries do for society..Those new bovoks that form come back into the library, for the next reader to be “buried with books”. The library is not a static set of shelves with books – but a container of ideas that bring life to the world.

Many forms, meanings, and interpretations of what librarians are to the community, and individuals at large, are revealed. Words, language, speech, thought, and information, all are ever-changing. Many still cling onto stereotypes from the 50's idea of a library and librarians, some good, most antiquated and needing a refresh. The depth of information revealed through librarianship is well-represented.

Reading can take you apart. Even when words are in order, you remain changed.
